Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Stawell St. Matthew's Uniting Church - Memorial Window Description & History
The window is an early example of the image of the ordinary Australian soldier used as the subject for a stained glass window. It may well be the work of Brooks, Robinson & Co., however no documentary confirmation has been found to date. The window was designed as a testament to faith and a thanksgiving for peace, while two other windows in the church were intended as an Honour Roll in stained glass. Little information has emerged to identify the men noted on the plaque. EC Mitchell may be Edward Mitchell, a labourer of Ligur Street Stawell who enlisted on 21 July 1915. After his training he embarked with 21 Battalion reinforcements on HMAT Wiltshire on 18 November the same year. Edward Mitchell became a local Councillor and was a prominent member of the church board, and in 1938 he donated another window to the church,The Good Samaritan, in a private unveiling ceremony.
