30 Sutherland Road, Armadale - Physical Description 1
The residence at 30 Sutherland Road is a grand example of a two-storey detached Italianate terrace that occupies a deep allotment on the east side of Sutherland Road, north of the intersection with Cambridge Street. The house is set back from the street behind a sympathetic reproduction palisade fence and a mature garden that largely conceals the front elevation from the street for part of the year. Vehicular access to the garage and studio addition on the rear property boundary is from Armadale Street.
Constructed c1890 the building has an M-profile hipped roof clad in slate tiles which is concealed by a tall decorative parapet that retains its balustrading and moulded pilasters. The acorn finials are sympathetic reproductions. The two-storey cast-iron verandah is notable for the high quality of the cast-iron work which is contained between two masonry wing walls. The cast-iron work incorporates a range of high quality floral patterns and interesting climbing vine cast-iron columns.
The front facade has a relatively plain render finish which has been painted except for the two visible chimneys which retain a ruled unpainted cement render finish with bold cornice mouldings. The windows openings are refined segmentally arched openings which are distinctive for their bold volute keystones. The double-hung sash windows are full height to both levels beneath the verandah. The fine entrance door retains the decorative glazing to the sidelights and highlight.
The front facade appears remarkably intact from Sutherland Road, despite extensions to the rear of the building. A modern family, dining and terraced pool area was constructed c2000 which greatly extended the length of the dwelling (Planning Permit 0365/00, City of Stonnington, 2000). A property advertisement video (c2011) shows that some period features were retained to the front rooms including marble fireplace surrounds and plaster mouldings.
