Residence - Physical Description 1
DESCRIPTION
The house at 52 Normanby Street, East Geelong, is set on an average-sized allotment for the local area. The house has a typical front setback of approximately 5-6 metres, and narrow side setbacks. The front garden consists of perimeter garden beds including some mature shrubs and grassed areas. The front is bound by a timber picket fence and gate that are approximately 1300 mm high.
The asymmetrical, single storey, horizontal weatherboard, Edwardian styled house is characterised by a recessed broad hipped roof form, together with a gable, minor gable and hipped verandah that project towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated steel. Two early unpainted pressed red brick chimneys with white-rendered bands and terra cotta pots adorn the roofline. Modest overhangs are features of the eaves.
At the front are early timber framed casement windows, and the timber framed central doorway also appears to be early.
A feature of the design is the front verandah formed under the projecting gable and hipped roof. It is supported by introduced square timber columns and has decorative Art Nouveau timber fretwork valances and shallow-arched timber brackets. The projecting gable also has early timber fretwork arches.
Other early decorative features of the design include the timber shingling and brackets in the gable infill.
There is also a timber and glazed infill wall to one side of the projecting gable.Heritage Study and Grading
