Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The structures of the Former Hamilton Gasworks site and any associated artefacts dating to the late 19th and early 20th century are significant.
How is it significant?
The Former Hamilton Gasworks site is of historical (Criterion A), archaeological (Criterion C), and technological (Criterion F) significance at a local and regional level.
Why is it significant?
Historically: The Former Hamilton Gasworks provides evidence of a formerly common industrial site that existed across Australia in the late 19th century. The Hamilton gasworks is also significant as representing part of the early growth of the Hamilton township into a regional centre.
Archaeologically: The archaeological features of the Hamilton Gas Holder (H1086) and other structures belonging to the gasworks site, as well as any associated archaeological evidence, dating to the late 19th century and early 20th century, are archaeologically significant. Archaeological investigation into these features have the potential to provide insight into historical operations of the gasworks, changing technologies for gas extraction, and the lives of the people living and working at the site.
