Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The site is first mapped as 38 of Section Q on the 1857 Revised Town Plan of Main Street. The Adelphi Hotel and Theatre is one of the more well-known establishments in the Ballarat Gold Rush and was established by Sarah Hanmer, a well-known performer. The Hotel was established in 1854 and was destroyed in 1855. The theatre and hotel was re-opened in 1856 to be destroyed by fire again in 1859, after which the ground was levelled and filled. By 1864 the Adelphi Hotel has been re-located to Sturt Street. The site was likely developed into Chinese commercial and residential premises, as a butcher Yong Fong is listed in the 1863-1865 rate books for Ballarat East. The 1936 BSA shows an odd, shaped timber structure rated as 231 Main Road and a brick warehouse to the east of the site. The building now contains brick structure in a similar style to the 1936 one. The Ballarat DEM shows 2m of fill across the site.
How is it significant?
The site is of archaeological of local historical significance.
Why is it significant?
The site is of historical significance as the location of Adelphi Theatre and Hotel and as a female ran business of the early gold rush. The site is known to have burnt completely in a fire of 1855 and in 1859, capping archaeological deposits. The site is historically significant as a late-nineteenth century hotel and theatre and later for its association with the Chinese community of Ballarat. The site is of archaeological significance due to its potential to contain artefacts, deposits and features that relate to the establishment of Charles Napier hotel and theatre in the early gold rush, and later 19th-century hotel and mission activities.
