Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The 1857 Revised plan of blocks E, F & H, Main Street, Ballarat identifies ‘Wilson’ as the occupier. Wilson is listed as a Surgeon dentist (Hunter 2024) and purchased the property in 1856 for an upset price of 50l., and valuation of 700l. The site is shown as the ‘Gibbing’s Livery and Bair Stables’ in the 1859 Cogne Lithograph of Part of Main Road. Hunter (2024) and historical references indicate that Gibbing’s had relocated to Sturt Street by 1865. Warne and Rand, drapers are noted to be adjoining the North Grant Hotel in Bridge Street. By 1890 94 and 96 Bridge Street were amalgamated and used by Ramsay as an iron monger until the early 20th century.
How is it significant?
The site is of archaeological and historical significance.
Why is it significant?
The site is first mapped as Allotment 3 of Section F on the Revised Town Plan of Main Road (1857). The site is likely to contain the archaeological remains of the Gibbing Stables, established in 1859, and later the Ramsay Ironmongery. The site is of historical significance as the location of an early residence and commercial precinct during the years of the Victorian gold rush – one of the most significant rushes in world history. The site is of archaeological significance due to its potential to contain artefacts, deposits and features that relate to the establishment of commercial operations in the gold rush, and other later 19th-century activities.
