Statement of Significance
The former Cook & O'Connor Supermarket is located on the north side of Bell Street between Martin and Burchett Streets in the centre of the township of Penshurst. The former Supermarket is a large timber framed building clad in corrugated iron on its side walls. The facade has two entrances, not recessed, and four large shop windows divided into large panes. The exact construction date is not known, but it may date from as early as 1920. The store was run by the Clement Bertrand Cook in the 1920s, and the ownership has remained in the same family for over 70 years. The store retains a high degree of integrity and is fair condition.
How is it significant?
The Cook and Connor Supermarket is of historical and architectural significance to the southern Grampians Shire and to the township of Penshurst.
Why is it significant?
The Cook and Connor Supermarket is of historical significance as one of the larger produce stores in Penshurst, subsequently converted into a supermarket, and of architectural significance as an intact example of such a building type. It is of further significance for the long association which it has had with the Cook family, who have been involved in the store since the 1920s.

A large timber framed building clad in corrugated iron on its side walls with a timber facade. The facade incorporates two entrances, not recessed, and four large shop windows divided into large panes. There is a post supported verandah with enclosed spandrels and a v-shaped advertising sign above it. The parapet of the facade is simple, faced with sheet metal and stepped to accommodate the gable roof. It bears the signage "Supa Valu, Cook and O'Connor Supermarket, Groceries and Hardware, Supa Valu". The roof is a simple gable and covered with corrugated iron.
