STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
St Andrew's Presbyterian Hall (former 1st Sunday School)
18 Gray Street
This 1890s building has local significance for its architectural interest as a former Presbyterian Sunday School in the Early English Gothic Style, and for its historical importance as a critical part of the St Andrew's Presbyterian Church complex in the prestigious Church Hill precinct. It was opened in 1890 as a Senior Sunday School and cost 1,250 pounds. ([i]) The building has historical associations with some leading Hamilton townsmen including William Thomson, of Thomson's Store, who was Sunday School Superintendent until his death in 1892 and his brother, John Thomson, who conducted an adult Bible class until his death in 1894. ([ii]) The building, a relatively late use of this style of polychrome brick remains substantially intact with one major sympathetic alteration. It is in good condition.
