Statement of Significance
Architecturally, its reconstructed verandah and cement detailing are notable, unusual and clearly identifiable with Bendigo. It is a prominent corner site, aiding in setting the context for the adjacent notable residential precinct.
Historically, it is linked with the locally important Cohn brewing family and has performed a long-term role as a meeting place in the community.

Golden Gate Hotel (former) - Physical Description 1
A 1925 plan shows the hotel plan outline much as it is today, with the adjoining shop to the east. A more detailed plan of 30 years later shows an hotel subdivision which may have been earlier than the c1906 date, but the main changes were the removal of the shop front, the conversion of these rooms to bedrooms and building of service areas in the former light well.[1] Some of this 'passageway' was removed in 1968.[2]
Essentially a traditional parapeted corner hotel form, the Golden Gate's reconstructed verandah immediately distinguishes it as sited in Bendigo and of the late Victorian/Edwardian eras. Fretted detail in the timber verandah arch and a beaded frieze elsewhere are both typical of the Edwardian era, in concept, and of Beebe's work, in detail. Additional to this are the ornate details over openings, the pointed arch in the parapet entablature and the orbs atop each parapet piers.
