Statement of Significance
The City of Brunswick Electricity Supply transformer station (former)located at 188 Brunswick Road, Brunswick.
The City of Brunswick Electricity Supply transformer station (former)located at 188 Brunswick Road, Brunswick is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Merri-bek.
Of historical significance as a representative example of an intact andfunctioning part of the infrastructure supplying Brunswick withelectricity since c.1914. It demonstrates the important role of localCouncils in the supply and distribution of electricity in the periodprior to the formation of the SEC in 1918. (AHC Criteria B.2 & F.1)
Of aesthetic significance as a representative and intact example of apublic utility building that assists in demonstrating the range ofarchitectural styles used in the construction of substations and similarbuildings in Brunswick, and regionally, across Melbourne. (AHC Criterion E.1)

City of Brunswick Electricity Supply Substation (former) - Physical Description 1
The former Brunswick Electricity Supply transformer station at 188 Brunswick Road, Brunswick is a painted, roughcast, square building topped with a square bellcast tower with fixed metal panels instead of louvres, each vented at the bottom. The roof on the building is painted corrugated iron, while the roof on the bellcast tower is metal in a pagoda style, and topped by a finial. This is now a CitiPower high voltage substation.
City of Brunswick Electricity Supply Substation (former) - Physical Conditions
Good
The site is in good condition, with rust evident on roof, some structural movement evident from a small metal bracing plate on the lower part of the south facade, and a small amount of bowing of the timber under the eaves. The rendered masonry is currently covered with graffiti.
City of Brunswick Electricity Supply Substation (former) - Integrity
Minor Modifications
188 Brunswick Road has a recently installed downpipe on the east facade and some old (non-significant) plumbing fixtures remain on the west facade. A metal fence is affixed at one corner, and the door has been replaced with an unsympathetic metal door. It retains high integrity overall.
