Statement of Significance
'Stanhope' homestead was erected in 1867 by the Winter family. It is a single storey rendered brick structure and comprises a principal wing with encircling cast iron verandah and a rear glazed gallery giving onto an open courtyard flanked by service wings. The ballroom is located at one end of the gallery. The reception rooms and corridor in the principal wing are still decorated with their original finishes.
This is a fine example of grand nineteenth century homestead design and is important for its association with the Winter family who held giant tracts of land in this area. Parallels between 'Stanhope' and other Winter homesteads are of great interest. The fine stained glass door surround incorporating the Winter coat of arms, the original finishes in the principal wing and the giant trees and shrubs in the once fine grounds are distinctive features. The outbuildings are notable.
The homestead is in original condition but in a disastrous state of disrepair and neglect..
