Statement of Significance
Contribution to landscape of historic garden
Outstanding size
This Pagoda Tree (Sophora japonica) is a very large specimen relatively uncommon in cultivation. The species is a native of China and Korea. The tree dominates one of the many shrubberies in the garden, reflecting the type of planting Guilfoyle recommended when he redesigned the gardens in 1910. The gardens were gazetted in 1865 and a plan was prepared by Daniel Bruce, designer of the Geelong Botanic Gardens.
The tree underwent tree surgery in 1985.
Located in the central bed.
