Statement of Significance
The Concongella War Memorial and Cemetery, 181Landsborough Road, Concongella, have significance as an important place of commemoration and as a significant cultural landscape to the local area. The cemetery appears to have been established in the mid 19th century, and contains a rare surviving timber head piece and timber picket surround dating from 1859 as the grave of Alice Dane. The War Memorial was constructed in c.1919-20 as a monument to the local soldiers who fell in the Great War.
The Concongella War Memorial and Cemetery are historically and aesthetically significant at a LOCAL level. The Cemetery is associated with the development of the settlement of the Concongella district in the mid 19th century (and certainly around 1859), with the consecration of the grassed land as a cemetery. The War Memorial is associated with the local soldiers who fell in the Great War between 1914 and 1919. The Memorial and Cemetery demonstrate important visual qualities. These qualities include the rural setting, open grassed area of cemetery ground with some surviving graves (particularly the timber head piece and timber picket surround to the grave of Alice Dane), rows of mature pines leading to the cemetery, and the granite Memorial obelisk with the marble tablets listing those soldiers who fell in the Great War.
The Concongella Cemetery is scientifically significant at a STATE level. The wooden head piece and timber picket surround to the grave of Alice Dane represents a rare surviving example of mid 19th century grave architecture.
The Concongella War Memorial and Cemetery are socially significant at a LOCAL level. They are recognised and valued by the Concongella community and the surround district for cultural, spiritual and commemorative reasons.

Cemetery & War Memorial, 181 Landsborough Road, CONCONGELLA - Physical Description 1
The Concongella War Memorial and Cemetery, 181 Landsborough Road, Concongella, have a rural setting. At the entrance to the Memorial and Cemetery are two rows of mature pine trees, terminating with the War Memorial.
The War Memorial consists of a narrow granite obelisk having an elongated base and stepped plinth. Fence posts and round steel rails define the memorial boundaries. Marble tablets affixed to the memorial list the names of the soldiers who fought and died in the First World War (1914-1919). One tablet also reads: "In Memory of Our Soldiers Who Fell in the Great War 1914-19, Lest We Forget".
The small open, grassed cemetery contains a few surviving headstone and grave surrounds. Of most interest is the rare timber head piece and surviving timber picket surround to the grave of Alice Dane, both of which are in poor condition.
COMPARATIVE
Cemetery - wooden tablets
Wooden tablets to graves are a rare surviving feature of 19th century cemeteries. A timber memorial is located at the Westgarthtown Cemetery, Thomastown. Timber tablets to graves also survive at the Stuart Mill Cemetery.
War Memorial Obelisk
A very similar First World War Memorial Obelisk, complete with similar surrounds, is situated at 2008 Landsbourgh Road, Joel Joel.
