Statement of Significance
The Port Melbourne Police Station, pre 1864, is significant as one of the first brick, double story police stations built in Victoria. It retains a high level of integrity and intactness and its continued use as police station until the 1990's testifies to the effectiveness of this early Public Works design.
The Lock-up, associated with the Police Station, is also significant as a good example of a simple, bluestone building again built to Public Works design and retaining a similarly high level of integrity and intactness.
The Police Station, with Lock-up, is a significant historical element in the Bay Street streetscape and a reminder of the earlier importance and vitality of the Port Melbourne area.
