Statement of Significance
Cape Grant is actually the remnant of a once large volcanic crater occupying Nelson Bay.
The rugged cliff faces defining the Cape are visually spectacular and contrast dramatically with the rolling character of the rural hinterland. Stunted and distinctive vegetation covers this area and contains many habitats for rare and endemic fauna, particularly bird life.
The Cape is strategically positioned in relation to Portland and the increasing recreational pressure from here. It acts as an excellent sight-seeing point and provides the viewer with vistas over undulating sand-dune country interrupted by exposed basalt outcrops, rock stacks and platforms.
Historically, Cape Grant is connected with native activity prior to the coming of sealing and whaling operations. It is the site of the landing of Captain Dutton, Portland and Victoria's first permanent settler and, significantly, the only historic site to remain as originally found.
