Statement of Significance
Lederderg State park is listed in the IUCN Category II (National Parks) of the United Nations' List of National Parks and Protected Areas. Its values are as follows:
(1) Aesthetic Value
The area is of high aesthetic value due to the contrast between various environments within the Gorge; the flat meandering riverine area, the steeply sloping sides of the Gorge, and the drier, flatter high ground surrounding the Gorge. The river is a proclaimed Heritage River.
(2) Historical Value
The Park is of some historical value due to the early gold mining activity which took place there and the remains of structures and tunnels which exist today.
(3) Scientific and Educational Value
Two aspects of Lederderg State Park are of scientific significance; its geology and its variety of vegetation regimes. The area has long been a destination for geology students to examine the structure and sedimentology of Ordovician rocks and the overlying Permian glacial deposits and Tertiary basalt.
(4) Social Value
The principal social values of the Park lie in its character as a challenging walking location quite close to Melbourne and Ballarat and the partial quality of remoteness which it retains due to the relative difficulty of access along the Gorge.
