POINT WILSON 2 - WESTERN HOMESTEAD - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: This house is taken to be the building marked on the 1864 map at this location. It is not marked on the original parish map (1853).Heritage Inventory Description
POINT WILSON 2 - WESTERN HOMESTEAD - Heritage Inventory Description
A two roomed house, a pile of basalt blocks and rubble to the south, remnants of stone walls to the east and south east, and two north west - south east trending trenches. The site was inspected in January 1995 - the rubble pile and the collapsed structures have spread more widely than was indicated on the '78 plan of the site. The southern tranch could not be located and the northern one was barely visible. A roughly circular feature, diameter approximately 3 metres was also found. The centre is filled with basalt blocks and rubble and appears to have been rock lined.
Heritage Inventory Site Features: Two roomed house - most of the walls remains consist of two courses above the foundations. Built from rough squared basalt blocks. The blocks and rubble fill are poorly cemented with mortar of sand, burnt sheel and some clay.Mortar was used to render the internal walls, portions of which retain whitewash. The chimney and fireplaces are still largely intact. The chimney tapers and the fireplace is made of poorly fired red bricks. Artefacts are scattered nearby, including slate which may indicate that the building had a slate roof.Rubble pile - forty metres south of the house and consisting of basalt rubble and roughly squared blocks. There appears to be no structure and the pile maybe material dumped here from the house site.Stone wall remnants - wall foundations consisting of unshaped basalt blocks. Roughly parallel to the walls of the house and are possibly the remains of stock pens/enclosures.Trenches - ill-defined trenches pass on either side of the house. The northern depression contains rubble along much of its length. The trenches may have served as drains, perhaps rubble filled.
