OLD NED'S GULLY ALLUVIAL WORKINGS AND PUDDLER - History
Old Neds Gully was opened in 1858, one of several new alluvial gullies that helped revitalise the Rushworth goldfield. It was reported that the workings were still paying in 1860. At the end of 1864 there were 24 men working in the gully. In 1872 there was a brief rush to the “town end of Old Ned’s Gully”. Total gold production from the gully is not known. A large gold nugget weighing 30 oz 4 dwt 18 gr was reported from Old Neds Gully.OLD NED'S GULLY ALLUVIAL WORKINGS AND PUDDLER - Interpretation of Site
Shallow alluvial mining landscape that reflects gold rush spacing of 8ft/12ft claims. The diggings are pronounced and visible and are associated with two dams and one puddling machine site. These landscapes provide an understanding of the human scale of the Victorian gold rush.

Heritage Inventory Significance: Regional
SiteCard data copied on 04/07/2024: The Old Neds Gully alluvial diggings follow a shallow north-south gully, between Pyle Rd and Walbran Rd, in Redcastle-Greytown State Forest west of Rushworth. They consist of closely-spaced shallow alluvial shafts, all collapsed and filled. The diggings extend for a distance of about 500m and are typically about 50m wide. There are two dams, one at each end of the diggings, and one puddling machine. This is in fair condition with breaches in the raised outer walls. No further puddling machines or hut sites were located.
