MERNDA 11, CAROME MILL - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Built circa 1841-2, Carome Mill was one of three grain mills operating in the Plenty Valley and was possibly the second one built. By 1867 the mill had ceased operation due to the decreased flow of Plenty River caused by construction of Yan Yean Reservoir. The mill was 2 storeyed, bottom being bluestone, the top timber. There was a fire at the mill in 1868.
First established in 1841 by Arthur Sergeasrtson. Purchased by Willis and Hardesty in 1857 and rebuilt. Expanded with overshot wheel. Cease operation in 1867. Mill fired in 1868.

MERNDA 11, CAROME MILL - Heritage Inventory Description
Ruins of Carome Mill, behind Carome Stud, on the Plenty River. Bluestone walls, overgrown with hawthorn, support terraces below the track to the river. Surveying limited due to flooding at the time.
Heritage Inventory Significance: High. The mill was one of the earliest flour mills in Victoria.
