House and Former Shop, 104 Main Street, GREAT WESTERN - Physical Description 1
The former butcher shop at 104 Main Street, Great Western, makes a significant architectural contribution to the single storey, pitched roof central township area. The house is situated on an average-sized residential allotment with the front portion of the building located on the front boundary, reflecting the former commercial function of the building. The remainder of the building has a front setback of approximately 2 metres. The surrounding garden consists of a grassed area, perimeter plantings and some trees. The front is bound by a timber picket fence, approximately 1200 mm high.
The asymmetrical, single storey, horizontal weatherboard, Victorian styled former butcher shop is characterised by a recessed hipped roof form that traverses the site, together with a skillion verandah and hipped roof store wing that project towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. Narrow overhangs are features of the eaves. Two timber framed, twelve paned double hung windows flanking an early central doorway with four panelled timber door under the verandah. An early 16 paned timber framed window and an early vertically boarded door are located on the front elevation of the projecting store wing.
A later gabled addition is located at the rear of the building.
