MORWELL BRIDGE 1 - SMITHS HOTEL, COBB & CO STAGING POST - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Site could be the location of the Cobb & Co staging post & hotel established at Morwell Bridge in the 1860s. Local history suggests site was on western side of river (now part of the Township coalfield) but local informants from historical society think otherwise. Smith's hotel was established in 1858.

MORWELL BRIDGE 1 - SMITHS HOTEL, COBB & CO STAGING POST - Heritage Inventory Description
Fenced paddock with ornamental planting's, building rubble & rubbish dump. Could be site of the Morwell Bridge Cobb & Co staging post & hotel. Site located on south side of Old Melbourne Road, east of Morwell River.
Heritage Inventory Significance: The site is assessed as being of high significance. the site contains a large number and diverse range of cultural material, is assessed as being a rare occurrence of a hotel staging post site within the region, but is in a deteriorated condition, having suffered a high degree of disturbance. Needs further work to assess whether the site is that of Smith's 1858 Hotel and other buildings. However if Morwell Bridge 1 is the location of smith's Hotel and the Cobb & Co staging post, the site would satisfy criterion A, for cultural heritage significance assessment - non Aboriginal historic sites.
Heritage Inventory Site Features: Exotic trees (Robinia psueloacacia - Black locust), elms poplars, rubble pile (demolished building) rubbish dump with early C20th bottles etc, collapsed tank stand & possible chicken pen. Old trig station in NE corner of site.
Archeological Potential: Extant bldg Fabric,Relics/Deposit
