Statement of Significance
The cottage in Burnside Road, represents an early and predominantly intact example of Victorian vernacular styled domestic design in St. Arnaud. It may have been constructed as early as the c.1860s, although the bullnosed shape of the verandah suggests a date after c.1890.
The cottage in Burnside Road is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in St. Arnaud in the 19th century, and with the Carlyon family, long time owners and local woodcutters. The cottage also demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian vernacular style. These qualities include the gable roof forms and the hipped bullnosed verandah that projects towards the street frontage. Other intact qualities include the galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, horizontal weatherboard wall construction, and the symmetrically arranged central timber panelled door and flanking timber framed double hung 12 paned windows. The substantial palm tree also contributes to the significance of the place.
Overall, the cottage in Burnside Road is of LOCAL significance.

House, Crown allotment 32, Section Q2, Burnside Road, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The cottage in Burnside Road, St. Arnaud, has a front setback of approximately 5 metres, and wide side setbacks. The site is bound at the front by a recent timber post and wire fence. A substantial palm tree and other trees are situated in the yard.
The symmetrical, single storey, horizontal weatherboard, Victorian vernacular styled cottage is characterised by gabled roof forms and a hipped bullnosed form verandah that projects towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in brown painted galvanised corrugated iron. The unpainted brick chimney at the side has been altered. The symmetrical composition of the design is highlighted by the early central panelled timber doorway flanked by early timber framed 12 paned double hung windows. The front verandah is supported by recent timber columns and a lightweight infill has been introduced to one side. There is a skillion addition at the rear.
