Statement of Significance
The shop building at 23 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, makes a significant architectural contribution to the predominantly Victorian and Federation streetscape. Although the exact date of construction for this building is not known, the design suggests that it was constructed in the early 20th century. For many years from the c.1930s, and possibly earlier, the McDonald family, and later the Crone family conducted a butchery business there. The front exterior of the building appears to be reasonably intact, and the verandah form and turned timber posts appear to be original.
The shop building at 23 Napier Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original or appropriate commercial design qualities for the early 20th century. These qualities include the dominant four-bayed parapet, with a central open pediment having a solid balustrade, flanking balustraded parapet and terminating elongated piers with projecting cappings. Other intact qualities include the projecting parapet cornice with brackets, incised rectangular title panel, single storey height, rendered brick wall construction, broadly projecting bullnosed verandah clad in corrugated Colorbond, timber fretwork verandah valance, turned timber verandah posts, and the form and proportion of the shopfront and ingo.
The shop building at 23 Napier Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with commercial developments in St. Arnaud in the early 20th century. It is also particularly associated with the McDonald family, and later the Crone family, who conducted a butchery business there for many years from the c.1930s, and possibly earlier.
Overall, the shop building at 23 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, is of LOCAL significance.

Shop, 23 Napier Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The shop at 23 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, makes an important architectural contribution to the predominantly Victorian and Federation streetscape.
The single storey, rendered brick, commercial building is characterised by a dominant four-bayed parapet, with a central open pediment having a solid balustrade, flanking balustraded parapet and terminating elongated piers with projecting cappings. The lower reaches of the parapet are defined by the projecting cornice with brackets, below which is an incised rectangular title panel, which is currently blank but has an illuminated sign projecting at a right-angle from it.
The ground floor is especially characterised by the broadly projecting bullnosed verandah clad in corrugated Colorbond. It is supported by turned timber posts with a simple early timber fretwork valance forming a decorative feature. The canvas blinds have been introduced.
The metal framed shop front windows has been introduced, but its form and proportions - and the ingo - all appear to be early, as may the tiled wall surrounds.
