Stawell Secondary College, (Former State School No. 1986), 79-97 Patrick Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The Stawell Secondary College building, Patrick Street, Stawell, is set on a large allotment. There are perimeter flower gardens with concrete kerbs near the front of the building, and substantial asphalt paving. Other later buildings are situated to the sides.
The asymmetrical, single storey, unpainted polychrome brick, High Victorian Eclectic Gothic styled Stawell Secondary College building is characterised by a gable roof form that traverses the site, together with two flanking gables that project at the front and rear, a castellated tower and a minor gabled porch that also project towards the street frontage. The gabled roof forms are clad in introduced tiles. Two early rendered and unpainted brick chimneys with projecting cornice cappings adorn the roofline. Modest overhangs are features of the eaves. The building rests on a coursed granite base.
An early feature of the design is the cream brickwork, forming horizontal bands, quoinwork, pointed arched window voussoirs and voussoirs framing the oculus ventilators in the main gable ends. The projecting gable ends also have large timber finials, with the minor gable porch featuring a trefoil motif in the gable end.
The early timber framed double hung multi paned windows are arranged as single bays along the traversing gable and side facades, as a large opening on one gable end and as paired windows on the other gable. The castellated tower also features pointed windows and ventilation openings, together with blind pointed arches. These arches are also accentuated by stuccoed label moulds.
Other early features of the design include the brick buttresses with stuccoed copings, stuccoed tablet on the main facade and the stuccoed castellated tower parapet.
The original roofing has been replaced and the finials removed. The air conditioning units on the roof and clearly visible from the street, have been introduced.
Comparative
The design for the Stawell Secondary College building has been derived from the Buninyong State School No. 1270 (1874) design by W.H. Ellerker, and the Creswick State School No. 122 design (1874). The design has a unique porch tower.
