18 HOPKINS STREET - History
Joseph's road precinct defined by the railway line and bridge built in the 1850's - Nth Boundry. Footscray township ( surveyed in 1849) to the suth. Between 1840s and 1860s rural land use and a sugarbeet distillery. 1860s -1879 Urban developement and the tanneries. 1880s -1915 residential and urban growth. 1910 -1952 expansion of tanneries.18 HOPKINS STREET - Interpretation of Site
Residential house possibly built to accommodate the expanding workforce for the tanneries
18 HOPKINS STREET - Archaeological Significance
No evidence for significant later disturbance. There is currently as open asphelt carpark at the location of this site. it is therefore highly likely that structural remains and occupation diposits might be preserved here.
18 HOPKINS STREET - Historical Significance
19th Century residence within an industrial and residential precinct in Footscray. May have housed workers from the tannery.

18 HOPKINS STREET - Heritage Inventory Description
Potential site of a residence dating to c.1894. Demolished by 1952 and the allotment incorporated into the Cleghorn Tannery block. There is no evidence for later disturbance.
