Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The MUIOOF Lodge (former South Star Gold Mine No. 1 Offices), located at 113 Albert Street Sebastopol, to the extent of the fabric dating between c1886 and 1909.
The Lodge is a long, narrow asymmetrical timber building, featuring a traverse gable roof and projecting gabled bay. Beneath the verandah are four six-over-six sash windows and a door with six cricket-bat panels and a highlight. There is a highset window to the projecting gable whose multipane sashes (as visible in historic photos) have been removed. The bargeboards to this gable have a star motif. The verandah has a concave roof and retains its cast-iron freeze, and bluestone border at ground level. Constructed as the offices for the South Star Gold Mine (located immediately behind and adjacent). The mine manager's residence (former) is located opposite at 122 Albert Street, Sebastopol.
How is it significant?
The MUIOOF Lodge is of historic, social and aesthetic significance to the City of Ballarat.
Why is it significant?
The MUIOOF Lodge is of historic significance as the only surviving Gold Mine Office associated with the Sebastopol goldfields. It is of further historic interest for its role inhosting the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George V) in 1901; a reflection of the importance of the mine as one of the few successful mining enterprises operating during this later gold-mining period. (Criterion A)
The MUIOOF Lodge is of social significance as the temporary site of the Sebastopol branch of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows (MUIOOF), a friendly society providing health, welfare and funeral benefits and life assurance policies to its middle and working class members. (Criterion G)
The MUIOOF Lodge is of aesthetic significance as a local landmark commemorating Sebastopol's mining past, which is situated on a prominent central site. (Criterion E)

MUIOOF Lodge - Physical Description 1
The former South Star No. 1 Gold Mine Office is a long, narrow timber structure with a transverse gable roof, and a projecting gabled bay at the south end. A long verandah stretches across the facade, terminating when it meets the projecting bay.
Beneath the verandah are four six-over-six sash windows and a door with six cricket-bat panels and a highlight. There is a highset window to the projecting gable whose multipane sashes (as visible in historic photos) have been removed. The bargeboards to this gable have a star motif.
The verandah has a slightly concave roof, which has recently been reclad in Colorbond. The verandah posts are stop-chamfered with the bottom two-thirds replaced, but presumably match the original. The timber capitals, visible in historic photos, are gone, but the verandah does retain its ornate cast-iron frieze. The floor has been replaced with concrete, but retains its bluestone border.
At the south end is an external chimney with moulded bricks at the top. It is not visible in a 1901 photo of the building, so appears to have been added shortly after. The chimney on the ridge of the long transverse gable section of the building replaced an original chimney (see 1901 photos) in the 1920s.
The rear of the building has signs of many alterations over time. At the south end is a small, highset window (corresponding with the highset window in the front projecting gable), which has been filled in. Next it are two original doorways with highlights (infilled), but new reproduction doors. Between the doors is an original six-over-six window, and to the north of them a six-over-one window. Beyond that is a new doorway, also with a reproduction door. At the north end is part of a skillion extension. The roof, unusually, slopes from south to north, instead of falling away from the main building. This appears to indicate that this extension was much longer (extending east) in the past. It has no external windows or doors.
The building is in excellent condition.
