FORMER 1 - 5 WIGHTMAN STREET RESIDENCES - History
the residences are within the 'Josephs Road Precinct' located just north of the Footscray township reserve surveyed in 1849.Development of the area occured after the railway line and bridge were constructed in the 1850s. Rural activities and a sugarbeet distillery in the area followed by development of two tanneries and ore urban dwellings.FORMER 1 - 5 WIGHTMAN STREET RESIDENCES - Archaeological Significance
Structures predominately of wood and brick occupied for approximately 70 years, probably leaving significant deposits. Current building is relatively light weight probably built in the 1970s and therefore not necessarily having removed all evidence of previous structures and occupation.
FORMER 1 - 5 WIGHTMAN STREET RESIDENCES - Interpretation of Site
No structures at this location until the urban residences constructed c.1890s, probably a result of the general expansion of Footscray following the boom period of the 1880's.

Moderate. Thie site comprises potential remains of the 19th Century houses set within a mixed industrial residential area, with a public house and transport infrastructure close by. Developement of the Footscray township.

Potential site of four residences dating to c.1890's. residences comprise of 1 wood and 3 brick, 2 and 3 roomed structures. Still standing in 1957, three still standing in 1974. Currently, there are two lightweight buildings standing here and an opencarpark.
