Dickson's Carriage Works (Former) - Physical Description 1
This building was constructed as a carriage works, apparently in several stages.
The building was originally the premises of the Ballarat Carriage Company.
Established in 1871 it was taken over 8 years later by James Dickson as sole proprietor who subsequently enlarged the premises. It is possible that the building was constructed in 1871 and enlarged at a later date.
The building is of a striking and unusual appearance. The ground floor comprises segmental arched bays. This is divided by pilasters and surmounted by recessed bands with a central circular motif. The arched openings are now filled in with new shop fronts - originally some, if not all, would appear to have served as carriage openings. The regularity of these openings is continued at first floor by 5 matching window groups. These are unusual in that they are all of a mannerist three window design - with small side lights and are surmounted by unusual hoods supported on consoles. The parapet comprises an unusually heavy cornice broken by a raised central section: The building facade is virtually intact except for later windows in the ground floor openings; It is an important streetscape building and relates to the Town Hall. The building is unusual for the repetition of door and window openings of this design.Heritage Study and Grading
