Former Ranger Barracks (Duplicate) - Physical Description 1
This hall was constructed in 1885 for the Department of Defence to a Public Works Department design. The drawing was signed by S.C. Brittingham, (then Assistant Architect (2nd grade) to the North Western District) and the constractor was James Taylor.
The building is a large ornate example of a timber army barracks building an is typical of the many army buildings constructed at this time. The 75 foot span of the main room is of note.
Externally the main facade of the building is substantially intact. The broad hood moulds and triangular window heads are of interest. Internally the original timber trusses shown on the original drawings have been replaced by metal trusses (of an early date) with curved edged connector plates. The internal doors are intact. The building to the left was built at the same time, but has lost the cast iron brackets to the posts, and the gable decoration and finial have been removed.
