Former W. Brown Family Grocer Shop - Physical Description 1
The striking form of this largely intact timber corner shop derives from the steeply sloping corner site. The Havelock Street facade of the single storey weatherboard building is of interest for its steeply pitched verandah roof below a weatherboard parapet with a timber cornice projection.
The building is simply and crudely detailed: the verandah is supported on chamfered posts with simple capitals and window sills rest on carved timber brackets.
The front and side facades are divided into bays by timber pilasters marked with a simple capital and base.
The site drops steeply down Clissold Street so that the rear elevation is prominent. The rear facade has a double gable roof form with an intact and simply detailed verandah across the rear facade. The bluestone foundation provides a sense of solidity to the building.
The date of construction of this building is not known but it was probably erected in the 1870's. The building is substantially intact with only minor alterations such as the removal of the original corner entrance door.
In its elevated position with all facades visible and intact it is a prominent streetscape element and a landmark in the area.Heritage Study and Grading
