Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
The Norfolk Island pine at no. 42 Mercer Street is of historical significance as a mature and prominent example of one of Queenscliffe's signature trees, and for its connection with Roseville Cottage. The tree is also of aesthetic significance as one of a number of specimens which help to define the character of Queenscliff, having a strong maritime association and being a dominant feature of the skyline. The elevated position of the tree and its impressive size reinforce its aesthetic significance.

Norfolk Island Pine, 42 Mercer Street, Queenscliff - Physical Conditions
Extract from the 2009 study
The Norfolk Island pine at 42 Mercer Street is in a prominent location at the top of a hill. It is likely to be a 'skyline specimen', that is to say a tree widely visible both within the township and from other parts of the Borough which helps define the character of the place. It is may well have been planted at the same time, or soon after, the construction of Roseville in 1864-65. The tree is approximately 28.5m high by 10m wide and is in good condition.
