OXFORD CHAMBERS (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
This building, constructed in 1894, is a late eclectic Doric composition. Paired, unfluted columns are positioned between square engaged columns and carry an entablature with roundels in the metopes, a central pediment above the entrance and above it a block motif with a primitive capping terminating in a palmette motif, flanked by a balustrade pediment. The windows have continuous architraves and are studded with paterae. The ruled ashlar of the wall surface runs right through behind the colonnade. This building is substantially intact but the composition is somewhat clumsy and inconsistent. There are better examples of single storey Greek revival/eclectic buildings in Victoria. However, this building is of local significance and forms an important streetscape component to this significant precinct.
