Shops, offices and dwelling - Physical Description 1
Located on a corner site (Mount and Burgundy Streets), the Interwar building at 124-130 Mount Street combines characteristics of the Edwardian Freestyle architecture of an earlier period, and the more contemporary Bungalow style.
The corner round-tower and cupola reflect the former, while the latter is seen in the hip roof, exposed rafter-ends and horizontal window strips. Face red brick and textured stucco are common to both styles. The west and most important elevation has a balance contrived by the grouping of fenestration elements and the offsetting of the gable to balance the mass of the tower to the north.
The building is quite intact, particularly at the upper level where the combination of face red brick, unpainted stucco and multi-paned timber framed windows are all intact. At the ground floor level render has concealed an earlier wall finish and most of the shop front windows along Mount Street have been replaced with modern equivalents.
There is a painted wall sign that is also of interest.124-130 Mount Street shows a successful combination of differing forms and design elements and has a prominent location in the Heidelberg shopping area. It is one of the few Interwar buildings left in the Burgundy Street commercial centre (Butler 1985).
