BUCKEYE HOTEL - History
The hotel was granted a license on 9 August 1854. The earliest known licensee was Mr Courtwright, who is thanked in an 1855 newspaper article for hosting a 4th of July celebration which 'American patriotism was mingled with respectful compliment to the queen' (The Aurgus, 13 July 1855). In December 1855, Courtwright transferred the license to Mr J Bodkin. The hotel was the final stop of the Cobb & Co company on the route to Bendigo. The stop was used to change horses before the grueling and dangerous ascent up Big Hill (Rutherford, 1971: 11). The hotel was a wel 'known and popular establisihment for those travelling to the goldfields or working on major railyway infrasturucture projects at nearby Big Hill. In 1857, it was used as a venue for a corronial inquest into the death of James Walkerm who was killed by a fall from his dray.
An 1855 surveyor general map marks the site as 'Buck Eye Inn', depicted on the eastern side of the main road to Bendigo. A later 1864 parish map uses the name 'Buckeye Creek Hotel'.BUCKEYE HOTEL - Interpretation of Site
Remains of Buckeye Hotel dating at least to 1855. May have been a Cobb & Co staging post.
Heritage Inventory Description
BUCKEYE HOTEL - Heritage Inventory Description
Traces of granite foundations and piles of weathered broken, handmade bricks. Few wall outlines visible but area elevated and covered in long grass. Remains of early road lie in the road median on the west side of the ruins.
Potentially high significance. May have been a Cobb & Co staging post on road to Bendigo gold fields. Structure has archaeological potential. Association of former inn ruins with traces of early road to goldfields is unusual.
Recorded by: Vincent Clark. Date Recorded: 28/09/2000 Granite foundations, handmade bricks.Inn ruins.
