Kensington Hamel Barracks - Veterans Description for Public
The Hamel Barracks in Kensington, were built on a site compulsorily acquired from City of Melbourne on February 19th 1942, twenty-eight acres for £50. The extent of mobilisation of the Second World War meant that storage facilities were needed for all branches of the service and for all types of products. General storage was typically in corrugated iron clad buildings. Some specialist facilities, such as magazines and ammunition stores, may have differed from this pattern. The older corrugated iron stores sheds of Hamel Barracks have been demolished but the newer 1970s brick buildings are still in use.
