Bandiana Army Camp - Veterans Description for Public
The Bandiana Army camp is characterised by typical P1 huts, stores and workshops all dating from the Second World War. The Second World War produced the greatest number and dispersal of defence buildings and sites ever experienced in Victoria. In general terms the style and construction followed the practice of the mid 1930s with the red brick style. In 1941, after the Japanese entered the war, defence efforts became more urgent and red brick was discarded in favour of timber framed buildings clad with corrugated galvanised iron or asbestos sheets.
The extent of mobilisation of the Second World War meant that storage facilities were needed for all branches of the service and for all types of products. General storage was typically in corrugated iron clad buildings. Some specialist facilities, such as magazines and ammunition stores, may have differed from this pattern.
