Cranbourne Cenotaph - Veterans Description for Public
Cranbourne Cenotaph, located at Greg Clysedale Square, is a large memorial located on Sladen Street. Established on the 29th of August 1939, it commemorates locals from the community who fought in the First World War, Second World War, Korea and Vietnam.
At the top of the face of the memorial is an art deco sculpture in bas-relief, which features a centrally placed angel figure flanked by figures standing shoulder to shoulder wielding long rod-like objects. At the top on the rear side, an engraved panel has been added that shows three servicemen and one servicewomen.
The exact date of the Cranbourne War Memorial is not known. Reputedly, it was originally constructed c.1919 when it was sited at the top of the hill in High Street at the commencement of the Honour Avenue that was planted in the same year. However, the design of the memorial would suggest a later date (possibly post-World War II). It is known that after being damaged by a milk truck in 1949 it was repaired and moved to a site outside the Shire Offices. An official ceremony to mark its restoration on the new site was held in 1952. In the 1990s it was relocated to its present site in Greg Clydesdale Square.
