Nurse Edith Cavell Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Edith Cavell Memorial is located in the Kings Domain, on Birdwood Avenue opposite the Shrine of Remembrance. Edith Cavell, born in 1867, trained as a nurse in England and was later posted to Brussels. With the advent of the First World War, Cavell was put in charge of the Hospital (which became the Red Cross) caring for Belgian, British and French soldiers. In 1915, the German occupying forces accused her of helping prisoners escape and she was sentenced to death by firing squad.
The memorial features a carved marble bust of Cavell on pedestal with bronze plaques depicting the nursing and execution of Edith Cavell. It was sculpted by Margaret Baskerville and unveiled by Sir Harry Chauvel on 11 November 1926. One of the plaques is inscribed with her last words: "But this I would say standing as I do in view of God and eternity I realise that patriotism is not enough I must have no hatred or bitterness to anyone."
