Bendigo Boer War Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
Bendigo's Boer War Memorial recognises the sixty-seven Bendigo servicemen who fought in the Boer War, seven of whom were killed. Most of Australia's contingent served in either the Victorian Mounted Rifles or the 6th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Light Horse. The Memorial comprises of bronze soldier on a large, elevated stone pedestal and base, standing with his rifle down. It was sculptured by John Walker and unveiled by Brigadier General Gordan on Friday November 11th 1904.The inscription reads:
"Bendigo's Tribute To the memory of the Australian Soldiers who
in the South African war of 1899 - 1902 gave
their lives for Queen and Empire"
