RALEIGH CASTLE - History
RALEIGH DEVELOPED THE AREA OF PORTIONS 4-7 FROM ABOUT 1849 AS A BOILING DOWN WORKS WITH A MANAGER'S HOUSE AND GARDEN AND WORKERS' ACCOMMODATION ON THE TOP OF THE HILL. THIS HAS A PROMINENT SPIRE AND WAS OFTEN CALLED A CHURCH OR A CASTLE AND WAS KNOWN AS RALEIGH'S CASTLE. RALEIGH DIED FROM INFLUENZA IN NOVEMBER 1852 AND THIS SEEMS TO HAVE LEFT ALL HIS BUSINESS ACITIVIES ON HOLD. FOR REASONS THAT ARE NOT CLEAR, BUT PROBABLY RELATE TO RALIEGH'S DEATH, THE SITE WAS IN USE BY 1854 AS THE VICTORIA IRON WORKS RUN BY THE ENGINEERING FIRM ROBERTSON, MARTIN & SMITH. IT IS NOT KNOWN WHEN RALEIGH'S CASTLE WAS DEMOLISHED.Heritage Inventory Description
RALEIGH CASTLE - Heritage Inventory Description
Physical Conditions:
Plotting the location of the Manager's House and Raleigh's Castle on to a modern map proved difficult as there was a lack of reference points common to each map to use for scaling purposes. The area of archaeological potential includes the following addresses; 5 Fabian Court (units 1-8), unit 5/17 Belvedere Close, units 1-8 Belvedere Close, and 14 Belvedere Close, Maribyrnong.
