SIMS STREET UNIDENTIFIED TIMBER SLIPWAYS AND BOATYARD - History
SOMERVILLE (PERS COMM), INDICATED THAT UNTIL THE 1970S, THERE WERE TIMBER SLIPWAYS ADJACENT AND TO THE NORTH OF SHEPHERD BRIDGE. NO OTHER INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE FOR THIS SITE, BUT IT WOULD DATE TO AT LEAST THE 1940S WHEN THERE WAS MAJOR SHIP AND BOAT-BUILDING IN THE AREA.SIMS STREET UNIDENTIFIED TIMBER SLIPWAYS AND BOATYARD - Interpretation of Site
The slipway is the only example of timber railed leeway known to exist in the area. The site would have social significance as a former workplace for many local workers.
