BUTTON HILL - History
THE BARWON PAPER MILL BEGAN OPERATION IN 1877. UP TO 200 MEN WERE EMPLOYED AT THE MILLS AND THEY MADE UP TO 40 TYPES OF PAPER. THE MILL CLOSED IN 1923. IT THEN BECAME AN ICE-WORKS AND IN 1941, THE NAVY MOVED IN.BUTTON HILL - Interpretation of Site
Site is presently subject to re-vegetation. Local action group, "Friends of Buckley Falls" are working to clear the area of noxious weeds, some of which grow on Button Hill. This adds to the immediate deterioration.
Heritage Inventory Description
BUTTON HILL - Heritage Inventory Description
Known locally as button hill, the site is located east of Buckley Falls Paper Mill. Hundreds or thousands of buttons predominate, eroding from the face of the hill. Also ceramics, bone, glass, metal fastenings from clothes, beads, etc are present. Site begins at the base of the hill and extends upwards for between 25-30 metres. The exposure is 10-15 metres wide. The site is divided by a fenceline with private property to the east. It is unknown if this site extends into this private land.
Artefact scatter. Fenceline dividing the site. It is likely that the deposit lies within the boundary of private property. Artefacts include: glass hexagonal button with gold gilt line, shell buttons (2-4 holes), metal press studs, metal buttons (4-holes) with writing "(s)tuart & co ltd", metal buckles "l.armfield", "solide", "paris", hooks and eyes.
