FORMER HARDING PARK SITE - History
The site was originally reserved as parkland in Hoddle's 1838 plan of the Geelong Township. During the 1890s the park contained a small depression that filled with water, forming a gully during winter. Historical accounts indicate that the depression was filled with ballast dredged from the Thames River and shipped to Geelong as the former park is close to the Yarra Street Pier. Prior to this, the locals used to throw their household, commercial and street rubbish into the depression (Brownhill 1990:328). Images of the park from the late 1890s onwards show a series of paths, fountains and trees.
