BARBER'S PIER - History
In April 1877, the MHT granted Mr McLarty approval to construct a small jetty on the old site of Ruffles Pier. The pier was built by 18/4/1879 and used by small boats and fishermen. The new pier was built at a right angle to the shore, and hence was not constructed entirely over the old pier site. It was 80ft long when completed in 1883, and in 1888 was used for fishing and associated storage (WC, 26/5/1888). The structure was later owned by ex pilot James H. Barber (1858-1924).The structure is shown in plans as Barber's Pier and the Old Pier, and a (MHT) 1921 plan shows the pier with a stepped landing at the SE extremity, with a proposed slipway to be built by J McLean between the Pier and Parson's Boatshed. A local resident, Mettagart (Pers Comms to Bob Leak) described the pier to be "fitted with a handrail on one side only, with a shed on the end, and an associated launching ramp". The pier was constructed of "timber trestles built on rocks" and by 1928 was gradually falling apart. It was subsequently demolished.BARBER'S PIER - Interpretation of Site
No evidence of the pier is visible at low tide, when a large portion of the intertidal foreshore is exposed. However, piles from the structure may still exist in deeper water offshore or under current landfill areas, along with other associated cultural deposits.
