SANDRIDGE BEACH MOORING CHAIN - History
The area was part of the Hobson's Bay Anchorage, which has been in continuous use since at least the 1850's. Five compass adjusting buoys were provided to the west of the extremity of Princes Pier from at least 1864 to 1907. The buoys were a facility provided for swinging (calibrating) ships' compasses.
It is possible thatmaterial cultureincluding barrel buoys and mooring anchors may still be present on site.
SANDRIDGE BEACH MOORING CHAIN - Interpretation of Site
No other associated material reported. Discovered by Peter Taylor but not inspected by Heritage Victoria. Mooring block 2ft cubed.
This feature may be associated with the former Compass adjusting facility close by, with other navigational buoys, or a possible loss of ships anchor chain. If associated with the Compass adjusting facility, it would have significance as the only example of its type in the study area, but further investigation is required.
