DONALDSON'S JETTY - History
This jetty is labelled as Donaldson's Pier in maps from 1858 (Ross) to 1894 (Cox). A vessel-shaped object is shown at its extremity in 1877 (BLC#2), which was possibly a floating dock. A T-junction had been added by 1890 (Messum). A slipway is shown nearby in 1860, possibly indicating the structure was used for boat storage and/or building. No other documentary evidence of the structure was found.DONALDSON'S JETTY - Interpretation of Site
Extensive underwater remains of timber piles and bottles were present in this general area in the late 1980s (Taylor, pers comm), but has not been inspected by HV staff. No remains are visible onshore. The site is likely to be that of the original Donaldson's Pier, and archaeological deposits from pier use are expected to be in situ.
