Statement of Significance
A Long-leaf Box (Eucalyptus goniocalyx) estimated to be about 400 years old. This tree suffered severe die-back during the 1970s, as did almost all of the eucalypts on the site, and despite the death of its upper crown, it has since produced healthy, vigorous growth from the lower branches. It is quite clearly one of the oldest trees in the municipality, since almost all of Maroondah was cleared of timber to supply the antimony mine in Ringwood, the goldfields of Warrandyte, and for firewood. Timber harvesting methods were vastly different prior to the turn of the century, involving the use of cross-cut saws and bullock wagons, rather than bulldozers, so the understorey was able to survive and tree regeneration occurred fairly uniformly.
