ROGERS PLACE HOUSE SITE - History
In 1849, government surveyor John Skene was contracted to subdivde sections of the isthmus between the eastern bank of the Moyne River and Port Fairy Bay - what would become known as Belfast East - into town lots to be offered for public auction. A total of 115 lots had been prepared and while several were taken up by speculators, the land still held limited interest for intending residents; largely due to the absence of a suitable bridge over the Moyne providing access to Belfast East. While the government promised to construct a bridge to replace the ford at the northern end of the Port Fairy township, it was not unitl 1854 that a bridge was constructed.
A plan of Port Fairy dating to 1870 shows only a small number of residences along Belfast East south of the bridge across the Moyne. This site is central in a cluster of five buildings in this part of Belfast East. Little details is currently known regarding this structure. Records show that Mr William Cole, merchant; Mr Tristram Colby, storeman; Mr Hugh Gray, miller; and Mr Patrick McDaniel, shipbuilder, owned properties here from ca 1860s to 1890s. However no specific information regarding ownership or construction has been identified.
ROGERS PLACE HOUSE SITE - Interpretation of Site
The site is located on a gentle slope leading westwards down to the Moyne River. The road and median strip appear to have been graded.
ROGERS PLACE HOUSE SITE - Archaeological Significance
The archaeological remains of the site could provide information on the size of the dwellings, the arrangement of internal spaces, the quality of construction and if pits are present, the living standards of the occupants.
There is potential for strip footings and/or post holes associated with the structure as well as refuse/cess pits.
ROGERS PLACE HOUSE SITE - Historical Significance
The residence was constructed in a part of Port Fairy that was regarded at the time as a poor choice of location.
