Mansfield War Memorial Arch and Gates - Veterans Description for Public
The Mansfield War Memorial Arch, at the entrance to the Sports Ground, was erected in 1921 as a memorial to residents who died fighting in the First World War. TheMansfield Memorial Gates were designed by Irwin and Stevenson AARIBA, William Street Melbourne. Irwin was a Melbourne Uni. Architect who was a WW1 returned soldier who studied in London prior to returning to Victoria. Anecdotally, the Gates are modeled on the Menin Gates in Belgium.
In 2007, the Minister for Veteran Affairs Bruce Billson unveiled plaques for the Boer War, First World War, Second World War, Vietnam, Malaya, Indonesian Confrontation, Vietnam, Korea, East Timor, Gulf War, Iraq War, Afghanistan and Peace Keeping missions.
Front inscription reads:
LEST WE FORGET.
ERECTED BY THE RESIDENTS OF MANSFIELD AND DISTRICT TO THE MEMORY OF THE FALLEN SOLDIERS IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 19
