HMAS Warrnambool Memorial Plaque - Veterans Description for Public
The HMAS Warrnambool Memorial Plaque is on the outside of the RSL Wall on Liebig and Merri Streets. The plaque commemorates the HMAS Warrnambool which operated from Darwin during the Second World War. After the war ended, the Warrnambool joined the 20th Minesweeping Flotilla to clear mines laid during the war. On 13th September 1947, the ship struck a mine off Cockburn Reef in North Queensland, sinking with the loss of four sailors and injuring twenty-six others.
